My non-negotiables in times of chronic stress

Stress is an unavoidable part of life, but unmanaged chronic stress can take a toll on your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. It can be very challenging to incorporate any wellness practices when we are so physically, mentally or emotionally spent. In both my personal experiences with stress and through clinical practice, I’ve identified 4 Non‑Negotiable Habits that support resilience, reduce burnout, and preserve long‑term health:
Up Your Protein Intake: There are very few scenarios where more protein is not advantageous for mood balance. During stress, cravings for comfort foods are natural, but refined carbohydrates and processed snacks increase big swings in blood sugar, heightening anxiety, irritability, and challenges with mental focus. Whole foods rich in micronutrients, protein, and healthy fats fuel balanced brain chemistry and emotional steadiness, so it makes sense to be liberal with these!
Prioritize Sleep Without Compromise: Chronic stress disrupts sleep, and poor sleep exacerbates stress creating a vicious cycle. Aiming for consistent rest (7–9 hours) with sleep hygiene strategies is essential. Regular sleep stabilizes cortisol rhythms, improves mood regulation, and enhances recovery.
Incorporate Passive, Low-Effort Physical Activity: Gentle movement from walking, yoga, and stretching supports lymphatic flow, reduces inflammation, and activates the parasympathetic (rest‑and‑digest) nervous system. Movement doesn’t have to be intense; consistency matters more. It is also very helpful when movement is passive and involves less learning or planning- so things like walking on a treadmill or watching a familiar fitness video are preferred to learning new exercises.
Hydrate With Intention: Dehydration can compound existing symptoms of stress including fatigue, irritability, and brain fog, and keeping water accessible throughout the day is a simple way to help manage these symptoms. It is also incredibly passive and requires next to zero prep!
Chronic stress can be overwhelming, and it is difficult to know which strategies are the “most” impactful with the infinite amount of health information we have access to. Your body will always require the basics and I am commonly recommending we place focus on this instead of the impressive diet or supplement regime. These non‑negotiables are not quick fixes, they are foundational habits that protect your health today and prevent long‑term consequences tomorrow.
